Horace Mitchell
Horace Mitchell, a writer for USA News wrote an article titled “Students Are Not Professional Athletes”. While Hartnett was saying in his article that student-athletes are so close to being professionals, Mitchell believes otherwise, stating, “Students are not professional athletes who are paid salaries and incentives for a career in sports” (Mitchell 1). Mitchell distinguishes the difference between being a student-athlete and a professional athlete. He also believes strongly in that these athletes should know they are students first and athletes second. He reaffirms that student-athletes are no more than amateur athletes competing in the game they love by saying, “Student-athletes are amateurs who choose to participate in intercollegiate athletics as a part of their educational experience” (Mitchell 1). In other words, college athletes shouldn’t be treated any differently than regular students who aren’t participating in a sport.
